Anchore Grype SBOM and Container Vulnerability Sentinel

Scans Software Bill of Materials (SBOM) or containers using Anchore Grype for unpatched critical vulnerabilities.

How it works

This workflow executes Anchore Grype (anchore/grype:latest) to audit container images or Software Bill of Materials (SBOMs) specifically for vulnerabilities that have available upstream fix versions (--only-fixed --severity critical). Filtering for actionable, fixable critical CVEs eliminates security alert fatigue and allows engineering teams to focus remediation efforts on vulnerabilities that can be resolved immediately by updating base images or package manifests. The workflow parses the Grype JSON output and alerts security teams if critical fixable flaws are found.

What you get

  • Real-time detection of actionable critical security vulnerabilities.
  • Eliminates alert fatigue by filtering strictly for vulnerabilities with available patches.
  • Automated daily scanning of critical deployment artifacts.

Who it's for

  • DevSecOps Engineers and Application Security Teams.
  • Software Release Leads managing security compliance standards.

Why orchestrate this with Kestra

  • Isolated Container Execution: Runs Grype without installing scanners on runner hosts.
  • Scheduled Daily Scanning: Automatically evaluates base images against daily vulnerability database updates.
  • Actionable Escalation: Routes notifications directly to Slack with clear remediation context.

Prerequisites

  • Container registry access for image pulling.
  • Secret SLACK_WEBHOOK configured in Kestra.

Quick start

  1. Import the blueprint.
  2. Input target container image name and tag.
  3. Run the workflow to scan for actionable critical CVEs.

How to extend

  • Pass an SBOM generated by Syft (syft <image> -o json > sbom.json) directly into Grype for faster air-gapped scanning.
  • Trigger an automated Dependabot or Renovate run to apply fix versions.
