AWS Global Accelerator Endpoint Group Healthy Host Count Sentinel

Audits AWS Global Accelerator to detect backend endpoint failures and prevent traffic ingress outages.

How it works

This sentinel leverages AwsCLI to query Amazon CloudWatch for HealthyHostCount across Global Accelerator endpoint groups. It detects when backend application load balancers or EC2 instances fail health checks, alerting edge infrastructure teams before anycast routing routes traffic to dead endpoints.

What you get

  • Real-time detection of regional endpoint failures behind AWS Global Accelerator.
  • Early warning before global traffic failover exhausts surviving backend instances.
  • Automated Slack delivery tracking accelerator ARN and minimum healthy host counts.

Who it's for

  • Edge network engineers and infrastructure teams managing global ingress traffic.
  • SREs supervising multi-region application high availability.

Why orchestrate this with Kestra

Kestra runs automated scheduled operational health checks with native error handling, secret injection, and multi-channel alerting.

Prerequisites

  • AWS IAM credentials with cloudwatch:GetMetricStatistics permissions.
  • Secrets AWS_ACCESS_KEY_ID, AWS_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY, and SLACK_WEBHOOK configured in Kestra.

Quick start

  1. Import this blueprint into Kestra.
  2. Configure accelerator_arn and credentials.
  3. Run manually to check current healthy host metrics.

How to extend

  • Query UnhealthyHostCount concurrently for complete host health profiling.
  • Dynamically adjust endpoint weights via globalaccelerator:UpdateEndpointGroup during failover events.
  • Forward edge health metrics to Datadog or Prometheus.
