AWS Site-to-Site VPN Tunnel State Down Sentinel

Audits AWS Site-to-Site VPN connections to detect down IPsec tunnels and loss of tunnel redundancy.

Categories
CloudInfrastructure

How it works

This sentinel leverages AwsCLI to query aws ec2 describe-vpn-connections and evaluate telemetry data (VgwTelemetry) for each configured IPsec tunnel. It alerts network operations teams when a tunnel drops, ensuring that loss of tunnel redundancy is investigated before a secondary failure takes down hybrid cloud connectivity.

What you get

  • Continuous validation of dual-tunnel IPsec redundancy across branch offices and data centers.
  • Early warning against customer gateway misconfigurations or ISP routing drops.
  • Automated Slack delivery tracking VPN connection IDs, down tunnel IPs, and status.

Who it's for

  • Network engineers and hybrid cloud infrastructure teams managing AWS Site-to-Site VPNs.
  • SREs maintaining reliable connectivity between on-premises environments and AWS VPCs.

Why orchestrate this with Kestra

Kestra runs automated scheduled operational health checks with native error handling, secret injection, and multi-channel alerting.

Prerequisites

  • AWS IAM credentials with ec2:DescribeVpnConnections permissions.
  • Secrets AWS_ACCESS_KEY_ID, AWS_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY, and SLACK_WEBHOOK configured in Kestra.

Quick start

  1. Import this blueprint into Kestra.
  2. Configure aws_region and credentials.
  3. Run manually to check current tunnel statuses.

How to extend

  • Query CloudWatch TunnelState and TunnelDataIn/TunnelDataOut metrics for traffic throughput.
  • Automatically generate incident tickets in ServiceNow or Jira for carrier troubleshooting.
  • Forward VPN telemetry to Datadog or Prometheus.
