AWS WAF Blocked Requests Surge and L7 Attack Sentinel

Audits AWS WAF CloudWatch metrics to detect surges in blocked malicious requests and L7 web application attack waves.

How it works

This sentinel leverages AwsCLI to query CloudWatch for the BlockedRequests metric on the specified AWS WAF WebACL over rolling 15-minute intervals. It alerts AppSec and SOC teams when attack mitigation activity spikes, indicating active bot scanning, credential stuffing, or exploit attempts against public endpoints.

What you get

  • Real-time visibility into edge threat mitigation across ALB and CloudFront endpoints.
  • Early warning during distributed application layer cyberattacks.
  • Automated Slack delivery tracking WebACL name and blocked request counts.

Who it's for

  • Application security (AppSec) engineers, SOC analysts, and security operations teams.
  • SREs maintaining public-facing web applications and APIs.

Why orchestrate this with Kestra

Kestra runs automated scheduled operational health checks with native error handling, secret injection, and multi-channel alerting.

Prerequisites

  • AWS IAM credentials with cloudwatch:GetMetricStatistics permissions.
  • Secrets AWS_ACCESS_KEY_ID, AWS_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY, and SLACK_WEBHOOK configured in Kestra.

Quick start

  1. Import this blueprint into Kestra.
  2. Configure webacl_name, aws_region, and credentials.
  3. Run manually to check current blocked request counts.

How to extend

  • Query CloudWatch Logs for WAF sample logs to extract top blocked IP addresses and user agents.
  • Automatically add offending IP CIDR blocks to an IP match rule group.
  • Forward WAF attack telemetry to AWS Security Hub or Splunk.
