Google Cloud BigQuery Slot Utilization and Reservation Saturation Sentinel

Monitors Google Cloud BigQuery slot consumption against project reservation caps to detect query queuing and throughput bottlenecks.

How it works

This workflow executes gcloud monitoring timeseries list via the Google Cloud CLI plugin to query bigquery.googleapis.com/slots/allocated_for_project across the target GCP project. In BigQuery enterprise reservations (capacity pricing) or baseline compute tiers, projects have strict slot quotas. When concurrent dashboard queries or complex joins exhaust available slots, queries enter an internal execution queue. When slot allocation crosses safe thresholds, Slack is alerted immediately.

What you get

  • Continuous monitoring of BigQuery compute slot allocation and capacity pressure.
  • Prevents unexpected ETL queue pile-ups and BI dashboard timeouts.
  • Quantitative metrics on peak slot usage across project workloads.

Who it's for

  • Data Platform Engineers and Analytics Architects managing BigQuery capacity.
  • FinOps Practitioners optimizing Google Cloud flat-rate and edition slot commitments.

Why orchestrate this with Kestra

  • Native GCloud CLI Automation: Direct integration using Kestra service account secrets.
  • Proactive Capacity Guard: Catch query queuing before downstream users report latency.
  • Automated Escalation: Formatted incident reports delivered directly to data engineering channels.

Prerequisites

  • Google Cloud project with BigQuery and Cloud Monitoring API enabled.
  • Secrets GCP_SERVICE_ACCOUNT and SLACK_WEBHOOK configured in Kestra.

Quick start

  1. Import the blueprint.
  2. Configure GCP project ID.
  3. Run the workflow to inspect BigQuery slot capacity.

How to extend

  • Automatically adjust BigQuery autoscale reservations via BigQuery Reservation API.
  • Correlate with BigQuery job execution history from INFORMATION_SCHEMA.JOBS_BY_PROJECT.
