Argo CD Out-of-Sync Application Automated Rollback Guard

Audit Argo CD applications for sync drift and degraded health. Enforce SLA windows, trigger automated sync or rollback, and alert Slack with diff summaries.

GitOps platforms rely on Argo CD for continuous reconciliation between Git repositories and Kubernetes clusters. When manifests contain invalid image tags, broken configuration maps, or schema incompatibilities, workloads enter OutOfSync or Degraded states. If left unattended, deployments stall, drift accumulates, and downstream services degrade.

This blueprint automates continuous GitOps health assurance. It polls the Argo CD REST API, tracks the duration of drift or degraded health against defined SLAs, executes dry-run or automated reconciliation (refreshing synchronization or triggering automated rollbacks to the previous stable revision), and alerts on-call teams via Slack with failing manifest lists, diff summaries, and application owner tags.

How it works

  1. Fleet discovery: The flow queries the Argo CD REST API endpoint (/api/v1/applications) using an authorized Bearer token to inspect all applications across target projects.
  2. SLA and health inspection: A Python analyzer parses sync status (OutOfSync, Synced) and health status (Degraded, Healthy, Progressing). It evaluates the elapsed time since the last operation or reconciliation cycle against the out_of_sync_sla_minutes threshold.
  3. Diff and manifest extraction: For each breached application, the analyzer extracts failing Kubernetes manifests (Deployments, StatefulSets, ConfigMaps), failure error messages, diff summaries, and application owner tags from resource labels and annotations.
  4. Automated remediation: When remediation is enabled, the flow dispatches targeted actions:
    • If action_mode is sync, it calls POST /api/v1/applications/{name}/sync to force reconciliation.
    • If action_mode is rollback or health is Degraded, it identifies the previous stable revision from deployment history and calls POST /api/v1/applications/{name}/rollback.
    • If action_mode is dry-run, it performs dry-run sync/rollback calls to safely evaluate impact.
  5. Slack incident notification: If applications exceed SLA thresholds, a rich Slack message is posted with fleet statistics, failing resource tables, diff summaries, and owning team tags.
  6. Audit trail: Outputs and operational logs record inspection counts and remediation actions taken for continuous compliance.

What you get

  • Automated detection of Argo CD drift and degraded Kubernetes workloads beyond acceptable SLA windows.
  • Safe automated remediation options: dry-run evaluation, automated sync refresh, or rollback to the previous revision.
  • Rich Slack notifications highlighting failing manifests, diff messages, and application owner tags.
  • Project-level filtering and configurable owner tag extraction (owner, team, app.kubernetes.io/part-of).
  • Flow-level error alerting preventing silent failures in case of API or network interruptions.

Who it's for

  • Platform engineering and SRE teams managing fleet-scale Argo CD deployments.
  • DevOps engineers requiring automated rollbacks when GitOps rollouts fail outside work hours.
  • Kubernetes cluster operators enforcing GitOps reconciliation SLAs.

Why orchestrate this with Kestra

  • Unified GitOps orchestration: Combine REST API queries, Python policy logic, conditional branching, and notification webhooks in an auditable workflow.
  • Safe progressive automation: Switch seamlessly between notify-only, dry-run, and fully automated remediation (sync or rollback) as trust in the workflow matures.
  • Granular error handling and retries: Built-in HTTP retry policies and error catch blocks ensure network blips do not cause false alarms or partial rollouts.

Prerequisites

  • An Argo CD instance accessible over HTTPS.
  • An Argo CD API token with permissions to read applications (applications, get, *) and trigger sync/rollback operations (applications, sync, *).
  • A Slack incoming webhook URL for incident notifications.

Secrets

  • ARGOCD_TOKEN: API token or JWT for authenticating against the Argo CD REST API.
  • SLACK_WEBHOOK: Slack incoming webhook URL for dispatching alerts.
  • ARGOCD_GUARD_WEBHOOK_KEY: Secret authentication key for the inbound webhook trigger.

Quick start

  1. Configure the ARGOCD_TOKEN and SLACK_WEBHOOK secrets in your Kestra namespace.
  2. Set argocd_server to your Argo CD endpoint (e.g. https://argocd.example.com).
  3. Run the flow with remediation_action: dry-run to audit your fleet and verify Slack notifications.
  4. When ready, switch remediation_action to sync or rollback and enable scheduled_sla_sweep.

How to extend

  • Add a PagerDuty or Opsgenie task to page on-call engineers when critical production applications degrade.
  • Integrate with Jira or GitHub Issues to automatically file remediation tickets with the failing manifest diffs.
  • Extend the Python script with custom team escalation policies based on Kubernetes namespace or cluster annotations.
