AWS Certificate Manager SSL/TLS Certificate Impending Expiration Sentinel

Audits AWS Certificate Manager (ACM) to identify public or private certificates nearing expiration and prevent browser TLS lockouts.

How it works

This sentinel leverages AwsCLI to list and describe certificates in AWS Certificate Manager. It computes exact days remaining before expiration, inspects automated renewal eligibility, and fires proactive alerts for imported certificates or unvalidated DNS records before service disruption occurs.

What you get

  • Proactive visibility into SSL/TLS certificate lifecycles across cloud load balancers and CloudFront distributions.
  • Early warning against expired certificate browser warnings and API client connection failures.
  • Automated Slack delivery tracking domain names, certificate ARNs, and days remaining.

Who it's for

  • Security operations (SecOps) engineers and network administrators managing public HTTPS endpoints.
  • SREs maintaining production ingress routing and TLS termination.

Why orchestrate this with Kestra

Kestra runs automated scheduled operational health checks with native error handling, secret injection, and multi-channel alerting.

Prerequisites

  • AWS IAM credentials with acm:ListCertificates and acm:DescribeCertificate permissions.
  • Secrets AWS_ACCESS_KEY_ID, AWS_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY, and SLACK_WEBHOOK configured in Kestra.

Quick start

  1. Import this blueprint into Kestra.
  2. Configure aws_region and credentials.
  3. Run manually to check current certificate expiration dates.

How to extend

  • Query Route53 to automatically verify that DNS CNAME validation records exist.
  • Request automated certificate renewal via acm:ResendValidationEmail.
  • Forward certificate lifecycle telemetry to Datadog or Prometheus.
