Hacktoberfest Contribution Tracker

Track Hacktoberfest PRs per contributor and post a daily leaderboard digest to Slack.

Categories
Business

Rally your community every Hacktoberfest. This blueprint searches all pull requests opened in your GitHub organization since the season start date, counts merged PRs per author (bots excluded), and posts a top-5 leaderboard to Slack each October morning.

How it works

  1. daily_in_october fires at 09:00 daily, October only (0 9 * 10 *).
  2. fetch_prs queries the GitHub Search API with retries on rate limits.
  3. build_leaderboard (Python) tallies pull_request.merged_at per login.
  4. maybe_notify posts the digest, or logs when the season is quiet.

Prerequisites

  • A GitHub organization with October activity.
  • A Slack incoming webhook URL.

Secrets

  • GITHUB_TOKEN: GitHub PAT with public_repo scope (required, search API rate limits are strict unauthenticated).
  • SLACK_WEBHOOK_URL: Slack incoming webhook for the digest and failure alerts.

Quick start

  1. Add the secrets, set github_org and since_date (season start).
  2. Execute manually any time of year to preview the leaderboard.
  3. Leave the October schedule enabled.

How to extend

  • Award review points by also querying state:open PRs awaiting review.
  • Persist history to Postgres/DuckDB for end-of-month prize reports.
  • Shout out first-time contributors separately from repeat names.
