OpenVPN TUN MTU Mismatch and Auth Token Expired Sentinel

Audits OpenVPN server telemetry to prevent TUN packet fragmentation, TLS auth handshake drops, and client gateway disconnect storms.

Categories
CloudInfrastructure

Audits OpenVPN access server telemetry across remote access gateways to detect TLS handshake verification failures, expired authentication tokens, and TUN device MTU packet fragmentation drops.

How it works

  1. A schedule trigger executes the remote access audit workflow every 15 minutes.
  2. The Python task queries the OpenVPN Prometheus exporter endpoint (openvpn-exporter:9176).
  3. The script extracts cumulative authentication verification failures, TUN interface packet drops, active connected client totals, and network throughput.
  4. An evaluation gate determines whether authentication failures or TUN drop counts breach operational tolerance bounds.
  5. When thresholds are breached, a high-priority Slack alert is dispatched to security operations and remote access SREs.
  6. When user tunnels establish cleanly without elevated errors, nominal telemetry is logged.
  7. A structured JSON audit manifest is emitted for remote access security compliance logs and gateway SLA telemetry archives.

Architecture components

  • Trigger: Automated schedule polling at 15-minute intervals.
  • Script Task: Scrapes OpenVPN Prometheus exporter metrics using Docker container isolation.
  • Decision Gate: Evaluates whether authentication failures or TUN packet drops exceed operational thresholds.
  • Notification Task: Dispatches structured Slack alerts with gateway identity and error metrics.
  • Audit Manifest: Emits JSON execution payloads containing connection health metrics and timestamps.

Key capabilities

  • Continuous surveillance of OpenVPN server management socket and connection metrics.
  • Rapid detection of client certificate expiration and CRL (Certificate Revocation List) update failures.
  • Immediate identification of MTU packet truncation issues causing RDP and SSH connection freezes.
  • Zero external dependency execution via isolated containerized Python runners.

What you get

  • Preemptive alerting on enterprise remote access disruption before employees open helpdesk tickets.
  • Automated tracking of active client session counts relative to licensed gateway capacity.
  • Real-time audit manifests capturing VPN gateway health for SOC 2 and ISO 27001 compliance.
  • Configurable tolerance thresholds adaptable to regional office gateways and central corporate VPN hubs.

Who it's for

  • Security operations engineers overseeing corporate remote workforce VPN infrastructure.
  • Network SREs maintaining OpenVPN Access Server, Pritunl, or community OpenVPN clusters.
  • IT administrators managing client certificate rotation and MFA integration (Okta, Duo).
  • Platform engineers diagnosing intermittent packet loss on site-to-site VPN cloud interconnects.

Why orchestrate this with Kestra

  • Deterministic Scheduling: Guarantees regular gateway health audits without fragile local crontab scripts.
  • Containerized Runners: Runs Python tasks inside isolated Docker containers without host library dependencies.
  • Condition Branching: Flowable If tasks route alerts and nominal logging cleanly without custom logic.
  • Enterprise Secret Safety: Securely injects Slack webhook credentials without plain-text exposure.

Use cases

  • Intermediate CA Expiration: Detects mass client connection drops immediately when an intermediate CA expires.
  • MTU Blackhole Discovery: Alerts when network path MTU changes cause large packet drops across TUN devices.
  • MFA Token Outage: Identifies authentication storms caused by upstream SAML/RADIUS provider timeouts.
  • Brute-Force Connection Flood: Surfaces rapid auth failure spikes caused by credential stuffing on public VPN ports.

Inputs

Name Type Default Description
openvpn_metrics_url STRING http://openvpn-exporter.vpn.svc.cluster.local:9176 Base HTTP URL exposing OpenVPN Prometheus metrics.
server_cluster_id STRING vpn-gateway-us-east-01 Target OpenVPN gateway cluster identifier under surveillance.
max_auth_failures_threshold INT 20 Maximum allowable authentication failures before alerting.
lookback_minutes INT 15 Lookback evaluation window in minutes for failure rates.
alert_on_vpn_failures BOOL true Toggle Slack alert dispatch upon detecting VPN failures.

Expected outputs

  • {{ outputs.scan_openvpn_gateway_metrics.vars.auth_verify_failures_count }}: Count of failed client authentication attempts.
  • {{ outputs.scan_openvpn_gateway_metrics.vars.tun_packet_drops_count }}: Count of packets dropped on TUN virtual interfaces.
  • {{ outputs.scan_openvpn_gateway_metrics.vars.active_connected_clients }}: Total number of active concurrent client sessions.
  • {{ outputs.scan_openvpn_gateway_metrics.vars.bytes_received_total }}: Cumulative volume of ingress network traffic in bytes.
  • {{ outputs.scan_openvpn_gateway_metrics.vars.is_alerting }}: Boolean flag indicating whether failure thresholds were breached.
  • {{ outputs.emit_audit_manifest.value }}: Structured JSON audit manifest emitted for compliance archives.

Prerequisites

  • OpenVPN daemon configured with management interface enabled and openvpn_exporter active.
  • Exporter port 9176 reachable from the Kestra worker execution environment.
  • Docker daemon running on the Kestra host to execute containerized Python tasks.

Secrets

  • SLACK_WEBHOOK_URL: Incoming webhook URL for the target SecOps Slack alerting channel.

Quick start

  1. Ensure OpenVPN server configuration has management 127.0.0.1 7505 enabled.
  2. Configure the SLACK_WEBHOOK_URL secret in your Kestra namespace settings.
  3. Specify your gateway cluster name in server_cluster_id.
  4. Execute a manual test run via the Kestra UI to verify metric ingestion.
  5. Enable the periodic_openvpn_audit trigger to establish automated continuous surveillance.

Common pitfalls and troubleshooting

  • Management Socket Passwords: If the management socket uses a password, ensure openvpn_exporter is configured with it.
  • MSS Clamping Required: If clients experience stalled web sessions, configure mssfix 1400 in server config.
  • CRL Expiration Date: OpenVPN rejects all clients if the Certificate Revocation List (crl-verify) expires.
  • UDP Connection Tracking: Heavy connection churn can exhaust Linux ip_conntrack tables on the host.

How to extend

  • Automated CRL Refresh: Trigger an automated task to download and reload updated CRL files when auth errors occur.
  • Gateway Failover Routing: Chain a route update flow to redirect remote workers to secondary regional gateways.
  • PagerDuty Escalation: Escalate to on-call security engineers if authentication failures exceed 100 within 5 minutes.
