Automated Cloud Cost Anomaly and LLM Token Burn-Rate Circuit Breaker

Orchestrate FinOps cost attribution rollups with DuckDB, statistical Z-score anomaly detection in Python, and automated budget circuit breakers in Kestra.

Cloud

Prevents runaway cloud infrastructure bills and uncached LLM token spikes from exhausting monthly engineering budgets by combining parallel metering pre-flight checks, in-memory DuckDB cost attribution rollups, Python Z-score anomaly forecasting, sequential chargeback synchronization, and automated circuit-breaker routing.

How it works

  1. Dual-Mode Ingestion (hourly_burn_rate_audit, billing_anomaly_webhook): Runs automatically on an hourly cron schedule for continuous FinOps governance, or triggers immediately when an upstream cloud billing provider or API gateway emits a threshold webhook event.
  2. Parallel Collector Pre-Flight (parallel_telemetry_preflight): Concurrently probes primary pricing feeds, fallback token metering APIs, and cluster quota controllers via io.kestra.plugin.core.flow.Parallel so downstream calculations never run against stale telemetry.
  3. Multi-CTE Cost Attribution (rollup_hourly_cost_ledger): Uses embedded io.kestra.plugin.jdbc.duckdb.Query to aggregate active workloads across llm-tokens, gpu-compute, storage-iops, and network categories, computing total spend and average prompt-cache efficiency ratios without external database overhead.
  4. Statistical Burn-Rate & Z-Score Engine (evaluate_burn_rate_forecast): Executes a Python financial modeling script (io.kestra.plugin.scripts.python.Script) that calculates rolling Z-score velocity against historical baselines, projects 30-day run-rate variance, inspects semantic cache hit ratios, and outputs a structured governance manifest.
  5. Ordered Chargeback Ledger Sync (sequential_ledger_synchronization): Coordinates step-by-step updates across AI Platform, Core Infrastructure, and Finance Forecasting ledgers via io.kestra.plugin.core.flow.Sequential.
  6. Automated Circuit Breaker Routing (route_governance_enforcement): Evaluates the Python anomaly flag via io.kestra.plugin.core.flow.If to either apply model-tier downgrades and escalate alerts during a cost spike, or certify compliance and archive the clean billing window.

What you get

  • Proactive Runaway Spend Protection: Catches retry loops, uncached prompt regressions, and orphaned GPU nodes within the hour instead of at the end of the billing cycle.
  • Statistical Signal Over Static Thresholds: Combines hard daily dollar caps with Z-score standard deviation velocity and prompt cache hit-rate guardrails.
  • Zero-Infrastructure SQL + Python Analytics: Runs complex multi-CTE financial rollups in memory via DuckDB and statistical forecasting in Python.
  • Audit-Ready Chargeback Trail: Maintains deterministic task logs across every cost center and execution window.

Who it's for

  • FinOps & Cloud Economics Teams automating multi-tenant budget enforcement and unit-cost attribution.
  • AI & Platform Engineers operating high-throughput LLM inference gateways (OpenAI, Anthropic, vLLM, Bedrock) who need automated fallback routing when token burn spikes.
  • SRE & Infrastructure Leads guarding production Kubernetes and GPU clusters against autoscaling cost runaways.

Why orchestrate this with Kestra

  • Declaratively combines Parallel endpoint probes, DuckDB SQL analytics, Python statistical scoring, Sequential ledger updates, and If circuit-breaker branching in a single version-controlled file.
  • Built-in parameterization allows teams to test normal vs. anomalous burn scenarios directly from the UI without modifying code.
  • Full Gantt and topology observability makes it easy to prove financial governance compliance during engineering audits.

Prerequisites

  • A running Kestra v2.0 instance with the DuckDB (plugin-jdbc-duckdb) and Python (plugin-scripts-python) plugins available.
  • Outbound network access for HTTP metering probes.

Secrets

  • No secrets required out of the box. When extending to live cloud billing APIs or Slack/PagerDuty incident channels, store credentials using {{ secret('NAME') }}.

Quick start

  1. Import this blueprint into your Kestra instance under the company.finops namespace.
  2. Click Execute with the default inputs (observed_daily_spend_usd: 615.40 against daily_budget_limit_usd: 850.00) to observe the OPTIMAL_WITHIN_BUDGET certification path.
  3. Re-run the flow with observed_daily_spend_usd: 940.00 or prompt_cache_hit_ratio: 0.25 to trigger the CIRCUIT_BREAKER_TRIPPED mitigation branch.
  4. Enable the hourly schedule or point your cloud budget alert webhook at the billing_anomaly_webhook trigger URL.

How to extend

  • Connect Live Billing Exports: Point the DuckDB rollup_hourly_cost_ledger task directly at AWS Cost & Usage Report (CUR) Parquet files on S3, GCP BigQuery billing exports, or OpenAI /v1/organization/usage JSON payloads.
  • Enforce Live Gateway Throttling: Replace the apply_model_tier_downgrade log task with an io.kestra.plugin.core.http.Request call to LiteLLM, Kong, or Cloudflare AI Gateway to dynamically switch default model routes from gpt-4o to gpt-4o-mini.
  • Attach Multi-Channel Incident Alerts: Add Slack, Microsoft Teams, or PagerDuty notification tasks inside the then branch of route_governance_enforcement.
