Automated Backup and Restore Verification Drill

Automated disaster recovery drill verifying backup checksums, restoring into an ephemeral sandbox, and validating data integrity in Kestra.

Orchestrate an automated disaster recovery verification drill that validates database backup archive existence and SHA256 checksums, restores data into an ephemeral sandbox container, asserts table counts and record freshness, and delivers verified recovery scorecards to Slack.

A backup that has never been restored is merely an untested assumption. Many engineering teams discover that their automated database dumps were silently corrupted, empty, or missing critical relational tables only during an active production disaster. This blueprint introduces a continuous, automated disaster recovery drill:

  1. Archive Integrity & Checksum Verification (verify_backup_integrity_and_checksum): Asserts that the dump file exists in object storage, has a non-zero footprint, and matches the expected SHA256 checksum manifest.
  2. Disposable Sandbox Restore (restore_into_disposable_sandbox): Spawns an ephemeral containerized database environment and performs a full restore drill.
  3. Data Usability Assertions: Verifies that critical table counts satisfy baseline thresholds, row counts are non-zero, and recent timestamps exist.
  4. Automated Notification: Emits an audit-ready disaster recovery scorecard to Slack, giving compliance teams verified proof of restorable backups.

How it works

  1. Triggering:
    • The scheduled_weekly_drill trigger (io.kestra.plugin.core.trigger.Schedule) executes weekly validation drills during off-peak hours.
    • The inbound_backup_completed_webhook trigger allows cloud backup scripts to trigger validation immediately following dump completion.
  2. Checksum Verification (verify_backup_integrity_and_checksum):
    • Runs inside a containerized Python runner (python:3.11-slim) to validate archive size and hash integrity.
  3. Sandbox Restore Drill (restore_into_disposable_sandbox):
    • Restores database schemas into an isolated test runner, asserting table counts and row statistics.
  4. Slack Reporting (evaluate_drill_results):
    • Notifies the team with verified restore durations and table counts, or pages on-call engineers if the archive fails to restore.

What you get

  • Automated, continuous disaster recovery validation eliminating backup uncertainty.
  • True ephemeral sandbox restore testing proving data usability before incidents occur.
  • Audit-ready verification records satisfying SOC 2 and ISO 27001 disaster recovery controls.
  • Real-time Slack notifications with detailed recovery metrics.

Who it's for

  • Database Administrators (DBAs) and SRE Teams guaranteeing business continuity.
  • DevOps and Platform Engineers automating recovery drills in CI/CD.
  • Compliance and Security Officers requiring verifiable proof of database recoverable states.

Prerequisites

  • Docker daemon accessible to Kestra for containerized execution.
  • Slack Incoming Webhook URL configured in Kestra secrets (if Slack alerts are enabled).

Secrets

  • BACKUP_DRILL_WEBHOOK_KEY: Secret key for inbound backup completion webhooks.
  • SLACK_WEBHOOK_URL: Slack Incoming Webhook endpoint for team alerts.

Inputs

Name Type Default Description
backup_archive_uri STRING s3://company-backups/postgres/... Target storage URI of the database backup archive.
database_engine SELECT PostgreSQL Target database architecture (PostgreSQL, MySQL).
expected_min_tables_count INT 20 Minimum number of tables expected in the restored database.
expected_sha256_checksum STRING SHA256 string Expected checksum manifest hash.
teardown_sandbox_on_completion BOOL true Destroy the disposable test container after drill.

Quick start runbook

  1. Configure secret SLACK_WEBHOOK_URL in your Kestra namespace.
  2. Trigger the flow manually to observe archive validation, sandbox restore execution, and data verification.
  3. Enable the Schedule trigger to automate recurring weekly disaster recovery drills.
